Outreach

For many years St. John's has been concerned about those beyond the doors of our church. In the year 2000, the people of St. John’s committed a yearly tithe of ten percent of our pledged income for work outside of the parish. For 2006, this amounts to $24,295.

These funds are administered by the Outreach Committee and have been used to support such programs as:

  • Webster Habitat for Humanity
This well known program which builds homes for worthy families in the community receives assistance from St. John’s both through the outreach program and the efforts of a large number of members of the parish church. Several time each year the people of St. John’s serve meals to the students from colleges and universities around the country who come to Webster Parish to work on Habitat homes.

  • The United Christian Assistance Program (UCAP)
Organized by representatives of many local churches, of which St. John’s was a founding member, UCAP provides food, clothing and financial assistance to members of the community who are in need.

  • United Christian Home
This group provides temporary shelter for families and single persons in a home style environment.

  • The Northwest Louisiana Interfaith Pharmacy
Members of St. John’s together with representatives of churches and organizations in Shreveport and Bossier brought to life this free pharmacy which provides much needed drugs and medications to those who are in need.

  • Thanksgiving Baskets
Each year Thanksgiving dinners are provided for many families in the Minden Community.

  • Annual Medical and Dental Mission to the Dominican Republic
Each year a large group of doctors, nurses and committed lay persons, coordinated by Dr. Richard Campbell, spend a week in Barahona, Dominican Republic. This past summer 1215 persons received medical and dental care in the span of three working days.

The Outreach Committee meets monthly to review requests by various agencies seeking our support.
